Dealing with Failure
When caring for the elderly, there is no getting around Murphy’s Law. No matter how careful one is, things can still go wrong. That is why it is up to us caregivers to know how to act when these events occur. Everyone freaks out over falls. A caregiver’s worst nightmare is to turn around and see their care recipient on the floor. Remaining calm and knowing what to do will help make the job easier on everyone. Also, mistakes can be great learning experiences for both the giver and recipient. Things get all the more tricky when dealing with Alzheimer and dementia patients. What works today may not work tomorrow. I suppose it is a lot like raising kids. If you become afraid of making a mistake, then you become paralyzed and will never make a move. Forgive yourself and move on. This will create optimism when beating yourself up is tempting.
